On Tuesday, February 21, residents of the neighborhoods along Memorial Drive packed the cafeteria of Drew Charter School to hear updates on “Imagine Memorial.”

Peachtree Road Update
If you commented on a certain project last year, you should have received a notice from GDOT. Inside was an update to the project, extending it south to the Buford/Spring connector (just over the bridge at the north end of Midtown). The letter reads, in part: "No bike lanes would be included in the project."

Atlanta Streets Alive in 2017: Which routes are returning, new, and on pause this year?
Since 2010, we have been closing miles of Atlanta streets to motorized traffic to open them up for people to explore by bike and foot. In total, we've hosted 18 Atlanta Streets Alive on 11 streets in just seven years.

The Gym Vs. The Great Outdoors
While thousands flock to the gyms to fulfill their New Years resolutions, we thought we'd bring some humor into it. Now, don't get us wrong---whatever gets you active is worth doing! If a gym provides the accountability or social interactions needed to get your heart rate up, then it's totally worth joining! On the other hand, if you're feeling guilty for not rushing to the cross-fit gym, or if you just despise indoor exercise (yes, I do too), then click the pictures and enjoy a little humor with us.

DeKalb Avenue Is Broken
DeKalb Avenue is broken. You don’t have nicknames like “the suicide lane,” on streets that work for people. It needs to be fixed so it will be safe for everyone.
Efficiency seems to be at the heart of Bill Torpy's argument against making DeKalb Avenue safe for people to walk and bike (“A bike lane on DeKalb Avenue? How?” Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dec. 19), so I’ll get right to the point: DeKalb Avenue today is “efficient” only if you define efficiency as speeding.

Pro Bike - Pro Walk - Pro Place
It is extremely impressive how Vancouver has advocated to become a livable City through many factions - citizen, non-profit and municipal, while taking a 360 degree approach to tackle challenges. While attending the Pro Bike Pro Walk Pro Place conference this past September, I had the opportunity to personally see the fruit of this arduous labor by riding an Amtrak bus through the suburbs, walking the City core, biking along the Seawall, riding the mass transit, and taking my very first sea bus. It was a hilly terrain, crowded with many modes hustling and bustling in a rapidly growing city, but due to increased enforcement, it was an awesomely pleasant experience as a tourist.

Make an impact on the 2017 City Elections!
You and I know that riding a bicycle is a clean and healthy way to get to work and around town, a fun way to connect with your community and your neighbors, and, for many of us, a source of limitless empowerment.
But sometimes people need a little nudge and a whole lot of bike infrastructure to feel safe and comfortable on a bike.
That's why we advocate for critical bike infrastructure funding for bike lanes, lead award-winning initiatives like Atlanta Streets Alive and provide free bike classes for all skill levels. We know we can change people's minds by getting them on a bike and, in the process, transform Atlanta.

VeloCity Awards Go To...
Our society doesn't spend a lot of time recognizing steps in the right direction. While we're waiting for a system overhaul, people are working diligently to do their part. At the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, we recognize that change is often incremental, and we want to be intentional about recognizing those who work in their lane to make biking safer and more accessible.
This intention led us to create the VeloCity Awards which we gave out at our Fall Fundraiser on November 17th. For those who couldn't make it, we wanted to share with you and pass along the torch of recognition.

Project Glow Lights Up The City
On November 4th, over 40 ABC members joined the first ever, Project Glow.
Members convened at Woodruff Park, and then divided into four groups. With fearless ride leaders and sweeps, they set out to ride roughly 8 miles each, and pass out lights to riders they saw riding without them. Along their ride, they also stopped at nonprofits to deliver lights that case managers and staff had requested.
At Lutheran Services, staff joyfully received lights that will go to newly arrived refugees who ride bikes for transportation. At Atlanta Mission, Mercy Community Church, and Gateway, light sets went to individuals facing housing insecurity.
