Preparing Students for the 6-lesson Unit
Prior to the unit, the teacher will introduce the bicycle to the students and the parts of the bike. Being a safe pedestrian will be introduced to help familiarize students with street signs, intersections, and sidewalks. The unit will build upon students’ prior knowledge by allowing them to recognize parts of the bike to help with performing an ABC Quick Safety Check and being safe in the community when walking or riding a bike.
Measuring Student Learning
Teachers will use the bike riding assessment and pre-assessment checklist to measure students proficiency in the designated skills.
- Use the bike riding pre-assessment in lessons 1 and 2 to help gauge materials and plan for lessons 3, 4 and 5.
- The bike riding assessment checklist will be used during lessons 3, 4 and 5.
