Website update coming soon

Ah, technology.  It can make life so much easier, but first you have to bend it to your will.  Over the past few months we've been working on updating our website to a newer version of Drupal (a free, open source content management system - it's like our online back office).  In so doing we will be able to link registered website users with ABC members.  We think this will reduce the paper, postage, and time spent on membership renewals and create a simpler, more fully automated process.

Legislative Update: "Superspeeder" bill to Governor

Breaking news: Senate passes “superspeeder” legislation, sends to governor. Drivers who hit or exceed 85 mph on a highway, and 75 mph or more on a two-lane road would pay an additional $200 state fine to any local ticket. Chalk one up for slightly saner driving in Georgia if the governor signs this into law.

ABC changes name to Atlanta Bicycle Coalition

ABC's board and members voted to change our name to Atlanta Bicycle Coalition to reflect our belief that it will take a community-wide effort to create a bicycle-friendly Atlanta. We remain deeply committed to the advocacy work implied in "campaign" but within the framework of a coalition of organizations, businesses, government and individuals working together to effect change. As Albert Einstein observed, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.”

National Bike Summit

This week a group of bike shop owners, bike advocates, planners, and volunteers traveled to Washington, DC to attend the National Bike Summit, organized by the League of American Bicyclists. I attended on behalf of ABC in order to accept a grant from Bikes Belong (details coming Monday), attend the great summit workshops, and join the rest of the good people from Georgia in meeting with our Congressional delegation.

Historic Roswell Criterium on the chopping block

The Roswell City Council is making budget cuts due to the current economic conditions, and the Historic Roswell Criterium will be on the chopping block at the next City Council meeting on Monday, March 16th at 7:30pm. Race Director Michael Johnson is encouraging as many people as possible to attend, noting that "if only three people show up, we can kiss this race goodbye. However, if we get a solid showing, say 100 people, it would be very difficult for them to tell us they have to cancel the race." If you cannot make it, please help us by sending an email to the members of the Roswell City Council (read more for contact info).

Georgia Rides to the Capitol 2009

Thanks to everyone who joined a chilly ride to the Capitol this year! We had excellent participation from local mayors, including the new mayor of the new City of Dunwoody. Georgia Bikes did a wonderful job organizing, as always, and ABC helped out by providing bike parking. Read on for news links.
