The Metro Atlanta Safe Routes to School Demonstration Project

What are the goals of the Metro Atlanta Demonstration Project?

The project has 3 specific goals:
1) To improve the safety of children who walk and bicycle to and from school;
2) To increase the numbers of school community members who walk and/or bicycle safely to and from school;
3) To prepare a guidebook for Safe Routes to School in Georgia.

Who sponsors this project?

The project was developed by the Metro Atlanta Safe Routes to School Coalition. It is funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation in association with the Federal Highway Administration. The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign, a member of the Coalition, is the organization carrying out the project.

How is the project carried out?

The project uses the "4 E’s" approach:

Engineering - focusing on infrastructure improvements around the school that support walking and bicycling;

Enforcement - focusing on legal enforcement of traffic laws as well as school policies that support walking and bicycling;

Education - focusing on bicycle and pedestrian safety training of children and adults in the school community;

Encouragement - focusing on fun, educational, and motivational activities and events that promote safe walking and bicycling.

Where and when is the project taking place?

This project is working at four school sites, two in DeKalb County, representing an urban environment, and two in Gwinnett County, representing a suburban environment. Programs in the schools will run from January 2004 through December 2006.

What will the demonstration project accomplish?

This is a demonstration project for the state of Georgia. At the conclusion of our work with the schools, we will produce a guidebook for use by others interested in establishing a Safe Routes to School program in their communities in Georgia.
