Safe Routes to School
It's Happening in Metro Atlanta

Many of us over 30 remember walking or biking to school as an important part of childhood -- a time to stretch our legs, explore our neighborhoods, make friends, feel the wind.... Many children today no longer have those opportunities. Safe Routes to School programs are developing in many parts of the world to bring that experience back to kids.
The Metro Atlanta Safe Routes to School Demonstration Project is the first comprehensive program to promote walking and biking to school in the state of Georgia. Our pilot project is making environments around schools safer so that more and more kids -- and adults! -- can walk and bike on their journeys to and from school. Our research will be compiled into a guidebook that will help other communities establish Safe Routes to School programs across Georgia.
The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign is now in its third year of this 4-year project. Many thanks to our partners of the
Metro Atlanta Safe Routes to School Coalition and to our funders, the Georgia
Department of Transportation/Federal Highway Administration!
