Building Momentum
Successfully pushed for protected bikeways, including buffered bike lanes coming to Ponce de Leon Avenue. Helped protect cyclists’ right to ride side-by-side by blocking legislation in the Georgia General Assembly that would have made it illegal. Whew! Organized two Atlanta Streets Alive events with over 35,000 people biking, walking, playing and eating in the streets and on the BeltLine. Helped the GDOT board adopt a Complete Streets policy for more bike-friendly projects, with the help of Georgia Bikes. Helped fund a green bike lane project including a “Copenhagen left,” cycle track, and cyclist push button at 5th Street and West Peachtree . Partnered on the first Metro Atlanta Bike to Work Challenge - over 1,000 bike commuters registered. Installed 28 bike racks at local businesses and distributed over 300 bike lights to cyclists in need. Provided secure valet bike service at fifteen festivals and special events, parking thousands of bikes. Supported the Cycle Atlanta smartphone app, which tracks bike trips to help city planners better accommodate bicycles. Doubled our membership! |

Bring Atlanta Streets Alive to Peachtree Street, our signature boulevard, on Sunday, May 19, 2013! Help create a bike share program in Atlanta and Decatur. Continue Free Neighborhood Bike Classes and expand to more neighborhoods. Open more projects like the 5th Street bike lane connection. With help from ABC, Bikes Belong, Georgia Tech, and Midtown Alliance, and with the city’s support, this project made smart use of limited resources. Advocate successfully for more bike lanes on projects like the Atlanta Streetcar. Our alternative proposal to install a bike lane rather than sharrows on Auburn Avenue got the city's attention. Install automated bike counters on popular biking corridors to complement our biannual bike traffic counts and help determine which roads to prioritize for bike lanes. Continue distributing bike lights and helmets to cyclists in need. We’re proud of helping reduce bike crashes and injuries in this simple way. Double our membership – again! Reaching 1,000 members made such a big difference in the effectiveness of our advocacy that we’re taking aim at the 2,000 mark for 2013. Take the mayor on another bike ride. Mayor Reed took a ride on the BeltLine Eastside Trail on a bike we arranged from a supportive local shop. As city officials take to the bike like never before, our requests are increasingly met with support and even enthusiasm. |
During this season of giving and thanks, we are thankful for you, our wonderful members, volunteers and supporters. We hope you will give the gift of better biking in 2013. By doing so, you will be contributing to a city that is not only better for biking, but just plain better. Because biking makes things better – and with your help, so can we. The city of Atlanta recently announced it will double the city's miles of bike lanes by 2016 – a huge commitment we could not be announcing without your vital support!
