City Rambler - San Francisco
I'm here on vacation, facing a high of 58 degrees today, and wanted to give a few notes.
First. a court case recently resolved, allowing the city to put in more bike lanes after a break of several years. The San Francisco Chronicle news story on it made reference to the "politically powerful" bicycle community. What will it take for Atlanta to have a "politically powerful" bike community? Should some of our members run for City Council?
Second, in a city known for enormous hills, I have still seen a few single-speed ultra-cool fixies. I have only seen them on the flat parts of town, though, never on top of a hill. But buses have bike racks.
Third, I visited a fitness center this morning. (Just looking -- honest!) They have a set of bike racks right outside their door -- but it's inside the mall (!!). Imagine that in Atlanta!
I'll be back to enjoy the heat in Atlanta soon. But I'm looking forward to the ProWalk ProBike conference, where I can hear cyclists from a number of cities describe their great efforts -- and their political power.

Coalition
I moved to ATL from San Francisco this morning, and I am excited to get involved in the Bike Coalition here. Part of what makes the SFBC so effective is that they have really made it cool/easy to participate. Hundreds of local businesses offered discounts/incentives for card-carrying members. Making coalition membership trendy is key.
With ~11,000 members, they really have a strong political voice, not to mention a strong street presence. I'd love to get in with the Atlanta scene and push for something similar.
