Streets ALIVE! It worked!

I saw a lot of happy folks at the first Atlanta STREETS ALIVE! event. The vendors at the Sweet Auburn Curb market seemed happy. The kids with the hoola-hoops were having a great time. The regulars at the Vesuvius Pizza were curious, but came out to watch the crowd (and be watched). The dancers who got it together under the Interstate, the mini-circus set up by GSU, the belly dancers in Woodruff Park, all had their fans.

It reminded me of so many festivals -- but it wasn't wall-to-wall people, or booths. It was very bike friendly - there was plenty of room to get around. Police controlled the traffic they let through (I only wish we'd had half of those through streets closed). Scooter and wagons abounded.

I found myself switching from bike to foot. Bike some, then park the bike and walk a block or two, check out the art work, then back to the bike. Sit a while with some food and watch the street. It was more fun and relaxing than I ever expected.

How soon until the next one? What can I do to help?

Friends have told me about

Friends have told me about ciclovia, but I always thought I would have to go to some other city to experience one. My first one was here, and I rode my bike to get there.

For change to happen, we need a vision. Streets Alive made that vision real.
