Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Funds Bicycle Safety and Education Program
ATLANTA – October 28, 2009 –The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition has been awarded a $41, 420 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to continue its Share the Road program for the eighth consecutive year. Share the Road is an advocacy campaign aimed at educating both motorists and cyclists on how to share the road legally and effectively. The funding cycle is scheduled through September 2010 and will support education and outreach efforts to further educate both motorists and cyclists throughout metro Atlanta.
The Share the Road initiative has two primary goals. First, to reach motorists with information on how to legally and effectively share the road with bicyclists, such as how to safely pass a cyclist on a narrow roadway and how to interact with bicycles as vehicles on the road. Second, to remind bicyclists in metro Atlanta to practice smart, safe riding by obeying all of the rules of the road.
“Communities across Georgia are working to create safe and accessible environments that support and encourage increased levels of cycling,” said Rebecca Serna, executive director of the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition. “With this grant, we will educate cyclists and motorists on how to share the road so that cyclists can bike safely to accomplish their daily activities while maintaining active and healthy lifestyles.”
As the number of cyclists in Metro Atlanta increases, it becomes even more important that cyclists and motorists understand how to share the road. To that end, the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition will promote the Share the Road program through a highly visible public campaign working with both local and regional agencies and partners. Additionally, ABC will continue to offer a full schedule of safety classes, special events and outreach efforts towards their goal of making Atlanta an exceptional city for bicycle users.
