Blinkie Award Winners

Last Saturday night ABC members gathered at Sidebar to recognize some folks who have been hard at work and play to make Atlanta a bicycle town (and drink beer). The first annual Blinkie Awards were handmade by longtime ABC member Jeff McMichael, and they inspired a lot of oohs and ahhs. Award categories were: Partner of the Year, Community Project of the Year, Media of the Year, Planning Initiative of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year.

Award winners were asked to answer the question, "What makes you optimistic about Atlanta's future as a bike-friendly city?" Below are their responses. Feel free to add your own!

2008 Partner of the Year: The Downtown TMA

"We are excited to be a contributing part of Atlanta's transformation into a bike-friendly city. The Downtown TMA is proud to partner with organizations like the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign (ABC) to promote bicycling as an exciting, fun option for Downtown commuters. As we continue to make strides in providing better bicycling facilities - including more bicycle racks and a commitment for new bicycle routes, the Downtown TMA is optimistic that the educational and promotional programs that we have worked on with ABC in 2008 are just the starting point for even more Downtown cyclists in 2009."

"I am optimistic about Atlanta's future as a bike-friendly city because everyone is excited to go "green" and to cut down carbon waste and as such, are more than happy to ensure that Atlanta is a better place because of that."

2008 Volunteer of the Year: Ruth Stanford

"It seems that in the four years I have lived in Atlanta I have seen an increase in bicycle use. I am one of these new cyclists, and given the number of die-hard bike commuters and amazing cycling activists I have met here, biking in the city will only continue to increase and get safer."
