Bike sharing at Emory makes national news
Bike Emory's innovative bike sharing and encouragement programs were recently featured on an 11 Alive news story picked up by 15 affiliates nationwide. Watch the video here.
Interest in bicycling as one answer to high gas prices has never been higher. This story highlights Emory's model efforts to help people escape the grip that high gas prices and congested commutes have on their staff, faculty, and student body.
Emory's program is worth examining as Atlanta's university community takes a closer look at the bicycle's role in resolving the transportation dilemma. Bike Emory, whose motto is "Why not bike?" notes "There are many reasons why people may not bike at or around Emory. Bike Emory was created to provide you with everything need to cycle safely, and encourage you to travel on two wheels."
Projects include bike checkout stations that gives Emoryites the ability to easily grab a bike and cycle across campus (a project of Fuji University), a mobile repair shop provided by Bicycle South, discounts on the purchase of a new bike from Fuji, and much more. University administration decisions to raise the cost of parking permits and research showing the astounding number of Emory faculty, staff, and students who live within an easily bikeable distance of the university create the right atmosphere for these programs to take hold and truly create freedom on two wheels.
Even if you don't live, work, or study in the Emory area, chances are you can pick up a few good ideas from Bike Emory. Visit their website at bike.emory.edu.
