Connecting the City

Biking is on the rise in Atlanta, but city streets are still catching up to the public's demand for bikeways that are safe, welcoming, and accessible to connect our city. ABC's Connecting the City campaign builds on successful advocacy for city commitments to better biking, including Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and the Atlanta City Council setting aside $2.5 million for bikeways over the next year. Along with culture-shifting initiatives like Atlanta Streets Alive, what was once just a dream – high visibility bicycle facilities on Peachtree, our signature street – is close to becoming a reality.

Peachtree is already slated for a section of bikeways in Downtown that will connect with a two-way cycle track coming to Peachtree Center Avenue. To the north of Midtown, bike lanes are being proposed for a section of Peachtree across the Connector, in Brookwood. Filling in the gap in the heart of Midtown would create a continuous bike connection that would dramatically increase biking in Atlanta. And it’s not just about Peachtree Street, although our campaign will start with this historic opportunity. DeKalb Avenue and Lee Street could be next.

This summer and fall, let's showcase the positive economic impacts Peachtree Street bike lanes will have on Atlanta's businesses.

What can you do to help? The best way to garner support for bike lanes on Peachtree is for YOU to show business owners that people ride bikes to their shops/restaurants.

So the next time you bike to Peachtree to eat at The Nook or buy a rug at CB2, make your presence known! Using the hashtag
#bikepeachtree, Instagram yourself, tweet directly at the business, or post a picture of yourself on their Facebook page. Here's a partial list of Peachtree business handles to get you started.
If you really want to help us put a friendly face on Atlanta cyclists, print these cards and hand one to the store's owner, letting him or her know how much Peachtree bike lanes would mean to you. THANK YOU for supporting the Connecting the City campaign!
