Historic Roswell Criterium on the chopping block

The Roswell City Council is making budget cuts due to the current economic conditions, and the Historic Roswell Criterium will be on the chopping block at the next City Council meeting on Monday, March 16th at 7:30pm. Race Director Michael Johnson is encouraging as many people as possible to attend, noting that "if only three people show up, we can kiss this race goodbye. However, if we get a solid showing, say 100 people, it would be very difficult for them to tell us they have to cancel the race." If you cannot make it, please help us by sending an email to the members of the Roswell City Council (read more for contact info).

Georgia Rides to the Capitol 2009

Thanks to everyone who joined a chilly ride to the Capitol this year! We had excellent participation from local mayors, including the new mayor of the new City of Dunwoody. Bike history notes: the 25th Bicycle Corps

I received an email today with a link to the fascinating story of the Buffalo Soldiers and their 19th century cross-country bicycle trip. Here's an excerpt: "In 1897, 20 soldiers, an army surgeon and a reporter led by Lt. James A. Moss rode bicycles from Fort Missoula in Montana to St. Louis, Missouri.

Blinkie Award Winners

Last Saturday night ABC members gathered at Sidebar to recognize some folks who have been hard at work and play to make Atlanta a bicycle town (and drink beer). The first annual Blinkie Awards were handmade by longtime ABC member Jeff McMichael, and they inspired a lot of oohs and ahhs. Award categories were: Partner of the Year, Community Project of the Year, Media of the Year, Planning Initiative of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year.

Check out photos here.

Award winners were asked to answer the question, "What makes you optimistic about Atlanta's future as a bike-friendly city?" Below are their responses. Feel free to add your own!

Grassroots bicycle advocacy - we need you!

Georgia's General Assembly is considering several bills that would create new funding sources for transportation projects in the state. ABC has been asking what these bills would mean for bicycle transportation projects since last year through our membership in the Get Georgia Moving Coalition. The answer so far is, a) no one is sure b) maybe c) who knows? or d) nothing. And that's not good enough. Read on to learn how to help.

Voting opens on ABC name change

We are considering changing our name to the "Atlanta Bicycle Coalition" to reflect the growing role of ABC in creating bike-friendly communities throughout Atlanta.

Rally to save the BeltLine

Maybe you've heard about the potential Amtrak right of way threat to the BeltLine and wondered what you could do about it. Well, this Saturday the BeltLine Network, a citizen advocacy group, is organizing a Rally to Save the BeltLine! At issue is a segment the Georgia DOT and Amtrak want to reserve for potential use by commuter rail (Read Most of DOT board didn't know about opposition to the BeltLine".) Yet other options exist for commuter that would not preclude the BeltLine. More details on the rally and just what is at stake after the break.

Blinkie Awards nominations open

As a member-based nonprofit, the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign relies on the volunteer and financial support of its members to survive and thrive. To recognize the folks who contributed to our success in 2008, we're holding the Blinkie Awards on January 31st at Members' Night (the annual membership meeting and social). The Blinkies will go to the volunteer, business, community partner, media outlet, and government agency or employees who did the most to further our mission in 2008. I want to hear who YOU think ABC should recognize - please submit your nominations in the form below.
