pedicabbers's blog

lessons from a recovered bike theft

Although I have had no training in my new found expertise, my experiences and inexperience in a "big" city have prompted me to write this blog entry. On Dec 14, 2009, while attending a ABC advocate meeting, I locked my bike to a rack behind Danemmans Coffee. There were 6 other bikes in the rack. Rebecca is very good at keeping meetings to 1 hour, so after 70 minutes we all walked out to our bikes. Rebecca noticed that in a hurry to lock her bike, she only locked her helmet to the rack and missed her frame/bike.

Lane position could save your life

Where do you position yourself on your bicycle when you approach an intersection? My position on Friday, 2pm, on Park Dr @ Monroe could have saved my life.

helmet usage

We have been scolded many times since moving here for not wearing our helmets while working our pedicab business. Does wearing a helmet make cycling safe? My thoughts are cycling is not a dangerous activity. It is what happens while riding your bicycle that creates a hazardous situation. And with the pedicab, it is a slow moving, stable, three wheeled vehicle. Would you tell your child that in order to be safe driving the family car, all they need to do is wear the seatbelt? Education is the missing link here. Seatbelt use is the law in the US and Georgia. Helmet use is not (for riders over 16 years old). We do advocate wearing helmets for bicycling. They are a life saving piece of equipment. Could we get "your" opinion on this??

Interesting day on the road

Pam and Mike are riding single file on Clairemont in Decatur. Fairly heavy traffic. We are holding and commanding our right lane, as the law states. A driver is really upset we are in his way, and as he passes us he yells out " get on the bike path!!" Well, there is no bike path or bike lane on Clairemont, so we tell him. After he cuts in front of us, he stops in the right lane mid block. We roll up to his right side and he tells us bicycles are not allowed on the streets. Really, we tell him. Lets call the police and find out. He agrees but takes off. Then he stops again 50 feet down the road and we pull up again on his right and he says he is calling the cops. We say fantastic, we are too. Now he says he will pull over at the next intersection.

we're gonna be by the pool.....

Arriving in Decatur near Feb 18th. Our trailer has 10 two wheel bikes, two trike recumbents, and two pedicabs. We're coming in to ride!! Here in Green Bay it hasn't been above 32 degrees for over 5 weeks. We just had 8 days of BELOW zero temps, and thats not even the windchill yet. Both my commuting fixie and mtb have studded tires on them. If you dont stud up, you dont ride.....will I need studded tires ITP?

Hello ATL !

Just signed up as members of ABC. My wife Pam and I (Mike) are moving into Decatur hopefully Feb 1, for sure by March. We are full time cyclists. We both are LCI's with the LAB. We are moving from the #2 state in the nation for bicycling, (Wisconsin) to #48 (Georgia). I rode this morning in -4 degrees weather, windchill -20's, and 6 inches of fresh snow. NO WAY is that better than any ride in Atlanta, any time! We love riding in Atlanta, and know that there are many challenges ahead. We are eager to help out the ABC and the residents of Atlanta
