ABC Hosts a Bicycle Facility Design Workshop

On Wednesday, August 12th, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition hosted a bicycle facility design class for Atlanta-area planners and engineers. Workshop attendance was free thanks to a grant provided by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. The purpose of the course was to provide transportation planners and engineers with information on the basic principles and the latest innovations in bicycle accommodation and facility design.

The full day class covered topics such as operational characteristics of cyclists, Bicycle Level of Service and other planning and analysis tools, a review of the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, design guidance for on-street and off-street bike facilities, and road design considerations for incorporating bicycle facilities within constrained right-of-way.

The course was taught by Bruce Landis and Chris Fellerhoff of Sprinkle Consulting, who developed and currently teach FHWA/NHI's two-day course bicycle facility design course (www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov/training/brows_catalog.aspx, course # FHWA-NHI-142046).

The workshop was attended by 29 engineers and planners from the following organizations or agencies: Atlanta Beltline Inc., Central Atlanta Progress, the Cities of Alpharetta, Atlanta, Decatur, Dunwoody, Marietta, and Roswell, Cobb County, Georgia Department of Transportation, and five engineering consultant firms. The interest in attending this training far exceeded the course's capacity, but unfortunately, ABC is unable to host more of these workshops due to lack of funding.

ABC seeking sponsorships to host future trainings in order to address the demand for more continuing education in this field. Please email Rebecca Serna or Amy Goodwin at info@atlantabike.org if your organization/agency is interested in sponsoring such a training.

ABC would like to thank Angie Laurie and Central Atlanta Progress/Downtown Transportation Management Association (TMA) for providing the meeting space and refreshments, and Byron Rushing and the Georgia Department of Transportation for assisting with map production.
